Lesbian Health Matters: A Newsletter

Compiled by GayToday
The Lesbian Health Research Center

The Lesbian Health Research Center distributed the first issue of its new e-newsletter, Lesbian Health Matters on June 12, 2003, reaching subscribers throughout the Bay Area and in more than 25 states and Canadian provinces.

Lesbian Health Matters

"Our goal is to bring you informative and relevant health information in order to make a difference in the lives of all Lesbian women," said editor Jodie Silberman in her welcoming editor's note. To be published quarterly with occasional special editions, the newsletter will also include health-related information for bisexual and transgendered women.

To be distributed by e-mail and available on the organization's web site, http://www.lesbianhealthinfo.org, the newsletter is a service of the LHRC Community Leadership Circle.

Joining Silberman in producing the newsletter are writers Naomi Rifkin, Angela Gross and Jan Corlett, PhD; copyeditor Linda Phillips, PhD; designer Tina Reynolds; webmaster Barb Rush; and project manager Betty Sullivan, EdD.

Additional contributors will be members of the LHRC co-founders / co-directors team: Suzanne Dibble, DNSc; Dixie Horning; and Patricia Robertson, MD. Guest contributors will frequently address specific topics in lesbian health.

"Lesbian Health Matters will help us bring information related to lesbian health out of the closet and into the hands of those who need it most," said Patricia Robertson, MD, LHRC co-director and professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive services at UCSF.

"Lesbian Health Matters is a timely phrase and one we are using not only as the name of our newsletter, but also as the theme of the important annual conference to be held this week at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center."

"This year our conference focus is on why lesbian health matters for the lesbian, her family, her healthcare provider and her community, said Suzanne Dibble, DNSc, UCSF adjunct professor of nursing and LHRC co-director.

"Attending will be community members, activists, practitioners, researchers, civic leaders and others. All who are interested in lesbian health are welcome and encouraged to participate."

The 3rd Annual Lesbian Health Conference was held on Saturday, June 14th at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market Street (@ Octavia).

About the Lesbian Health Research Center

The Lesbian Health Research Center (LHRC) is specifically and uniquely concerned with the health and wellbeing of lesbians, bisexual women, transgendered individuals and their families; and with the health care available to them. We believe that every lesbian has the right to be fully informed about her health, health care should be sensitive and relevant to lesbians and lesbian health research is critical. LHRC has begun to bring lesbian health information out of the closet and into the hands of community members and health care providers through its on-going activities and services.
