Love's Revolution Meets the New Generation

Move over, Ellen DeGeneres, and make way for the younger girls. Way younger, actually, and way different from what most people think of as lesbians…You can see this new trend on Friday nights outside Union Station, sweethearts from high schools around the Washington area, some locking lips, others hanging out in their tight blue jeans and puffy winter parkas, talking on their cell phones…So are these girls bisexual? Perhaps. But they prefer descriptions like "gayish," questioning, even "queer" - an umbrella description so broad, according to Root, that it encompasses straights as well as gays…Try this on, Mr. and Mrs. America: These girls say they don't know what they are and don't need to know. Adolescence and young adulthood is a time for exploration and they should feel free to love a same-sex partner without assuming that is how they'll spend the rest of their lives.

A Target on Bishop Robinson's Back?

In the two months since the Rev. V. Gene Robinson was consecrated as New Hampshire's new Episcopal bishop and became the nation's first gay bishop, he has had to make some small and sometimes unsettling changes…With great reluctance, he has finally decided to give up his front-room office in Concord. He worried that church members would think he was less accessible. But his security advisers convinced him that he couldn't work in front of a large glass bay window. If he had stayed there, he said, they told him he might as well paint a target on his back.

What McCarthy Era Historians Haven't Told You

Despite the concern, even hysteria, at the time, and the many people affected, historians of the McCarthy era have given stunningly little attention to the Lavender Scare. Political historians of McCarthyism, anticommunism and the rise of the national security state emphasize the role of partisan politics and foreign policy, and minimize moral and cultural concerns. If they mention the lavender Scare at all, they portray it as a minor byproduct of the Red Scare, one so seemingly natural and inevitable as to need no explanation. Even the most recent studies of McCathyism, both defenses from the Right and critiques from the Left, all but ignore how the fears of Communists and homosexuals overlapped.

The Ethical Treatment of Morons

Dear David: Just got a peek at the website: http://www.spies.com/gus/ran/0012/antiporn/index.html Thanks for existing. I don't have to wrack my addled imagination dreaming you up or culling different persons to create composites...You are all the uninteresting, weird, and whacky aspects of the Wrong (formerly known as the Right) that makes ya'll poster people for the Ethical Treatment of Morons. Unlike your approach, I wish you no ill will. Indeed you are the cartoonish canon fodder whom gleefully, resignedly, we fire upon: results of unfortunate gene pool manifestations: fat, lumpy, bovine, pizza faced targets of our, perhaps slightly mean spirited, derision. Since you are fond of the concept of creating new laws, filling coffers of an exponentially expanding trough of lawyers, I shall gladly contribute to your cause. How about a license which must be secured before humans of questionable mental fortitude, social prowess, and comeliness that they may be allowed to procreate? Who would stand on this Board? Aside from myself of course, why, all of the people whom you'd deign to incarcerate, fine... and/or fashion photographers. Please continue making my cautionary recommendations regarding religious dildos so much the easier...Best Wishes,

Rupert Murdoch's Worldwide Media Strategy

(Rupert) Murdoch offers his target governments a privatized version of a state propaganda service, manipulated without scruple and with no regard for truth. His price takes the form of vast government favors such as tax breaks, regulatory relief (as with the recent FCC ruling on the acquisition of Direct TV) monopoly markets and so forth. The propaganda is undertaken with the utmost cynicism, whether it's the stentorian fake populism and soft porn in the UK's Sun and News of the World, or shameless bootlicking of the butchers of Tiananmen Square.

India: Activists Host a Revolutionary Film Festival

For some gays and lesbians the film festival was a catharsis of emotions while for some others its was coming out of the closet and celebrating their very existence…Larzish - Tremors of a Revolution, the 1st International Film Festival of Sexuality and Gender Plurality held in Pune on Sunday received an overwhelming response from the gay, lesbians, bisexuals and other sexually marginalized people from the city…Replete with award-winning feature films, documentaries, short-films, the festival organized by city based lesbian support group OLAVA (Organized Lesbian Alliance for Visibility and Action) in association with the India Centre for Human Rights and Law (ICHRL) and Humjinsi, a Mumbai based support group for lesbians sensibly dealt with issues related to the sexually marginalized people.

Activism Quickly Turns Australia's Hell into Heaven

Tasmania has shed its image as the homophobic capital of Australia to become the nation's No. 1 destination for gay people…Progressive laws and a positive community attitudes towards homosexuality have led to a surge in gay and lesbian migration to the state…Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome said yesterday the state's image had turned 180 degrees since he led the fight for law reform in 1997.

Noam Chomsky's Popularity

Revered and reviled, Noam Chomsky is a global phenomenon. Indeed, if book sales are any standard to go by, he may be the most widely read American voice on foreign policy on the planet today. With the United States increasingly suspect around the world-a recent Gallop poll found that 55 percent of citizens in Britain thought the United States "posed a threat to peace," while a June BBC survey found that 60% of Indonesians, 71 percent of Jordanians and even 25% of Canadians viewed the United States as a greater threat than Al Qaeda-the appetite for Chomsky's polemics is only increasing.

Activist Shareholders

The growing use of resolutions to promote nondiscrimination policies is part of a recent upswing in shareholder activism on a variety of issues, particularly environmental causes and corporate governance. Shareholders have also campaigned to reform business practices in countries linked to international terrorism, to curb the marketing of tobacco to youngsters abroad and to improve working conditions in foreign factories, among other issues…According to the Investor Responsibility Research Center in Washington, 1,035 shareholder resolutions were filed in 2003, up from 802 the year before and 739 in 2001.
