At GLAAD's 10th Annual Media Awards March 28 in New York, the first of three ceremonies this spring, the stars were out. RuPaul, the world's most beloved drag queen, accepted the Vito Russo Entertainer Award in a gossamer gilt sheath, thanking her fans and Team RuPaul (including our friends at World of Wonder) for her look and management. |
Broadway divas showed their support. Alan Cumming, emcee of Cabaret hosted, and presenters included Olympia Dukakis, Bebe Neuwirth, David Marshall Grant, Stephen Spinella, Swoosie Kurtz, Bernadette Peters and Stockard Channing.
| Rosie Perez and John Waters made for an inspired pair of presenters, while the remarks of Homicide's Richard Belzer showed the crowd where he stood politically. "Anybody who thinks there's not a vast right-wing conspiracy in this country must also think that Ken Starr should be our next ambassador to Luxembourg," zinged the television star in his signature dark glasses.
The Lady Chablis auctioned off parcels great and small, including a walk-on part on Fox's Ally McBeal that went for a record setting $16,000.
The night's emotional highpoint came as Judy Shepard accepted an award on behalf of the Casper (Wyoming) Star Tribune-- to a standing ovation by the sold-out crowd of 1,700.

Lifetime ("Television for Women" - and gay men) has OK'd the production of a new pilot entitled How Could Happen, to be hosted by Melissa Etheridge. Etheridge will pull together reality-based stories of women who have encountered twists of fate and who have had life altering experiences. |
If Lifetime likes what they see, we should expect additional episodes to air later this year's Sitcom legend and talk show diva Roseanne has just been added to the list of guests expected to attend the 10th Annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on April 17. Roseanne, and then husband Tom Arnold, were GLAAD's 1993 Vanguard Award recipients for their groundbreaking work on her sitcom.
New in record stores: Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida featuring such diverse artists as Tina Turner, The Spice Girls, LeAnn Rimes and Janet Jackson.

The New York Daily News reports that Go stars Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf shot unscripted sex scenes that never made it into the film. However, a scene or two may find their way onto the DVD version. The controversial film The Silence of the Lambs may soon have a movie sequel.
Author Thomas Harris unexpectedly delivered his long-awaited manuscript Hannibal to his stunned literary agent last week. No word yet on a film sequel or on whether Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins will return for sure.

Lucy Liu, who recently sounded off on bisexuality to Details, will soon start production on Play It to the Bone with Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson. However, the Ally McBeal star can next be seen at the 10th Annual GLAAD Media Awards April 17 in Los Angeles.

In 1993 country legend Garth Brooks won a GLAAD Media Award for his song "We Shall be Free." In George magazine, the superstar elaborates on his lyric, "when we're free to love anyone we choose."
