Church Leaders Must Be Responsible for Their Own Actions

Compiled By GayToday

New York, New York-A full page ad addressing the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church and admonishing them not to blame gay people for the current crisis in Church environs, appeared May 24 in the New York Times.

The ad's visual shows the spires of Manhattan's St. Patrick's Cathedral. In large print at the top of the page appear these words:

Catholic Church Hierarchy: Don't Blame Gay People

The text of the ad, placed between St. Patrick's Cathedral spires, reads:

The hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church is refusing to acknowledge its failure to deal with child abuse. They have chosen to move abusive priests from parish to parish, and protect criminals instead of children and their families.

Now church leaders are engaged in a cynical and orchestrated campaign to scapegoat gay people for this moral and public relations disaster.

These reckless and hurtful statements do nothing but distract from the real issues.

All sexual abuse by any person is wrong.

Catholic church leaders must take responsibility for their own actions, end the cover-ups, and stop demonizing gay people.

A significant number of Americans signed the ad, irrespective of their sexual orientations. National lesbian and gay groups, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Human Rights Campaign, Dignity USA, Empire State Pride Agenda and the Metropolitan Community Church of New York were also signatories.

Since early March, GayToday coverage has shown that Roman Catholic leaders have been planning to scapegoat homosexuality as an "intrinsic evil" that has led their priests, bishops and cardinals to molest minors.

On March 7, over a month before the meeting of U.S. Cardinals at the Vatican, the Vatican's own spokesperson initiated the hostile anti-gay tones, hoping to whip up old prejudices in order to deflect the criticism that has provoked unprecedented waves of horror and anguish in the American church.
