Hooray! The Christian Coalition Loses Donald Hodel

ccgroup.jpg - 9.55 K Christian Coalition Chairman Pat Robertson (center) with outgoing President Don Hodel (left) and Executive Director Randy Tate. When Pat Robertson announced the appointment of Don Hodel and Randy Tate to run the Christian Coalition in June of 1997, he said their assignment was to double the group's membership, train twice as many political candidates and double the organization's legislative initiatives in Congress and in state legislatures.

A year and a half later, none of this has happened. The group's membership is stagnant, and it suffered serious setbacks during last November's elections. In addition, the group's tax-exempt status has repeatedly been called into question, and evidence indicates that the IRS may finally be ready to deny the organization the right to operate as a non-profit.

Hodel had an impossible task in trying to make the extreme views of Robertson palatable to the American people. His failure indicates that the Christian Coalition has finally hit a wall as more and more Americans reject religious-political extremism.

The American people do not want Robertson, through his hand-picked henchmen, meddling in their religious and personal lives. They reject his politics as extreme. Don Hodel did the smart thing: He got out before his reputation was irreparably tarnished by the mean-spirited, exclusionary politics of Pat Robertson.

Next Month in The City: 'The Teen Files'

copwatchgay.gif - 4.93 K The San Francisco Police Department has helped develop and produce a segment on teen hate and prejudice toward gays and lesbians for a nationally syndicated television series that will air next month.

The Teen Files will show students from Downtown High School traveling throughout San Francisco with a police officer. The officer serves as a liaison in discussion groups between the students and gay teen-agers. By the end of the segment, the officer has built a positive relationship with the students. The officer reveals that he is gay and breaks many stereotypes discussed in the episode. The show will air March 5 at 10 p.m. on KBHK, UPN Channel 12.

GLAAD Alert Special: Fox Files Update!

foxfiles.gif - 13.40 K For the past several weeks, GLAAD has been keeping you informed about the outcry over the January 21 Fox Files' segment "Undercover in the Night." As of today, GLAAD's continued efforts to create a dialogue with Fox have failed . GLAAD is now asking the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its allies to send letters and e-mails to Fox Files' advertisers.

The following information regarding the segment, is available to view at GLAAD Online

… An extensive analysis of the segment including comments by many of those interviewed in the story … Community leaders denounce segment … GLAAD's condemnation of the segment … Letters from the community

GLAAD's criticism of Fox Files is not based on a belief that stories portraying the community in a negative light should never be told. GLAAD strongly believes that all Americans should be educated on issues that impact our collective lives. However, that belief is firmly rooted in the principles of journalistic integrity, as well.

Regardless of the topic, stories should be fair, accurate and balanced. Simply put, Fox Files presented an unfair, inaccurate and unbalanced story. "Undercover in the Night" is a series of short, unsubstantiated and dangerous stories mixed into a slick and sensationalistic package that serves to demonize members of the community.

GLAAD encourages members of the community to write or e-mail the following advertisers of the January 21 edition of Fox Files and let them know why the segment was offensive to you. Encourage them not to advertise on any of FOX's news programs until the network agrees to open a dialogue with the community about "Undercover in the Night." We also encourage you to copy your letters and e-mails to FOX Broadcasting Chairman David Hill.
