Bankrupting the Religious Right

envelope.gif - 6.69 K One of my friends passed this on to me. I thought this was such a good idea that I am passing it on to any other people that would be interested.

A lot of the religious right organizations send out monthly mailings, newsletters, requests for donations, etc... Mass mailings are not cheap to do, by the way. I received one envelope from the Christian Coalition that cost them $1.25 to mail, not to mention all the stuff inside they had to pay for printing!

I signed up for a couple of these organization's mailing lists and it gives me a good feeling every time I get something from them and I get to throw it away. Though some of it is kind of useful.

You would not believe the stuff I get every week. Almost every day, I get something (usually asking for money). Those prepaid return envelopes are handy for dropping in the mail empty.

One or two of the congressional voting record pamphlets was actually quite useful as it told me how my senator and congressperson were voting. And, they were even kind enough to give me the address for Disney so I could send them a note of support.

Every little dime I drain out of their pockets makes me feel a little better. I thought I would share their URLs and see if anyone else was interested in getting on their mailing lists.

It is not a big drain on their resources, but it is a small one and every little bit helps!

Please pass this along to as many people as you can think of and get your friends to sign up as well. I signed up my parents, brother, sister and neighbors because I know that they will all throw the stuff in the trash! Just remember not to give them your real telephone numbers. (evil grin)

Fox News in the Redneck Dialect

murdconfd.gif - 12.94 K Rupert Murdoch ... Southern Style Hey! I don't know if you'll find this funny or not. There's a website called the Dialectizer (www.rinkworks.com/dialect) that will take normal English text and translate it into different dialects like Redneck, Cockney and Swedish Chef (from the Muppet Show). Well, just for shits and giggles, I took GayToday's Top Story on FOX News and ran it through in Redneck. Here are opening paragraphs to show how it came out:

Noo Yawk, Noo Yawk --FOX Noos titan Roger Ailes, writes Michelangelo Signo'ile in th' March 8 Noo Yawk Obsarver, was see "scarfin' down ho's d'oeuvres at th' cocktail party"—a fundraizzu fo' th' Nashunal Lesbian an' Gay Journalist's Associashun. Th' occashun, said Signo'ile, was bizarre. Whuffo'?

Signo'ile explains: " Mr. Ailes, af'er all, is th' media wizard who he'ped both Chattanooga Reagan an' Jedidiah Bush court rabidly antigay religious zealots in successive political campaigns, offen screamin' at gay ackivists along th' campaign trail an' doin' whutevah he c'd t'silence them when th' cameras began rollin'. An' he today wawks fo' ultraconservative Rupert Murdoch, whose Noo Yawk Post an' other publicashuns haf cast homosexuals as th' greatess threat t'modern civilizashun."

FOX Chairman Rupert Murdoch has come unner fire fum gay ackivists. Ultraconservative FOX owny, Rupert Murdoch, was, as noted in November by GayToday, at th' center of his London tabloid's homophobic scan'al which suggested a "Gay Mafia" is runnin' th' United Kin'dom, dawgone it. GLAAD's exasperashun wif Rupert's FOX noos-gatharrs in th' U.S. showed up af'er its failed attempp t'deal rashunally wif FOX executives. Problematic was th' showin' of a falsified January 21segment of th' Fox Files titled: "Unnercovah in th' Night".

Hope this translation pleases you.

Buried in Texas

On November 30, 1993, Nicholas West, a young gay man in Tyler, Texas, was kidnapped by gay bashers, tortured and terrorized in a gravel pit. His abductors shot Nicholas so many times (and at such close range) that the coroner couldn't distinguish entry and exit wounds.

As the newly arrived Dean of the Cathedral of Hope MCC in Dallas, I was asked to speak at Nick's memorial service in the park from which he was kidnapped. Because Texas judges were tempted to let gay bashers off with a slap of the wrist, Diane Hardy-Garcia and I attended the killer's two week trial in distant Kerrville.

As other terrorized gay men who had escaped these same captors told their stories, I sat in that almost empty courtroom and wept. One young man, a Wal- Mart clerk, had been kidnapped, held at gunpoint, and terrorized with repeated games of Russian Roulette. Before they could kill him, the naked boy managed to dive into a nearby, nearly frozen lake where he stayed for five hours with his tormentors shooting bullets into the darkness hoping to kill their prey.

In 1994 alone, we buried 12 gay Texans who were murdered by gay bashers who felt that were doing God's business to eliminate our innocent brothers.

In July, 1994, Benny Hogan was picked up in a San Antonio Park during a "sting" by police and charged with "loitering." He was talking to other gay men on a park bench at the time of his arrest. The Christian Coalition in San Antonio took out an ad in the paper publishing the names of men picked up in that "sting" including Benny Hogan.

On Pride Sunday, feeling "ruined and shamed" by this public "outing", Benny hanged himself in his grandmother's garage. Benny's brother asked me to conduct a memorial service for Benny on the steps of the newspaper that published his name.

Nicholas and Benny are just two of the uncounted millions of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders who face suffering every day of their lives.
