Quentin Crisp Archives

Quentin Crisp Archives invites you to visit www.crisperanto.org and enjoy the continued celebration of Quentin Crisp and his life in words and pictures.

The mission of the Quentin Crisp Archives is to preserve and maintain the manuscripts, artworks by and about, and various artifacts related to the life and legend of Quentin Crisp for the purpose of education, research, and the promotion of his philosophy of individuality, self acceptance, and tolerance.

Quentin Crisp was seen as a "personalityıs personality," and his distinct views on life were embodied in what his friends and followers now refer to as his "Crisperanto" philosophy, which is best expressed in Mr. Crisp's writings. An ongoing bibliography of Quentin Crisp's writings and film career is located at www.crisperanto.org/books

Quentin Crisp had a notoriety that was his, and his alone: He dared to "be" himself in London in a time when men like him were viciously beaten on street corners and publicly scorned for being themselves. It is an enduring testimony to Mr. Crisp's spirit and indomitable sense of self that he survived the almost daily onslaughts of anti-gay violence and intolerance.

Quentin Crisp attracted a modicum of fame first in England and then, upon the publication of his 1968 autobiography‹and especially the subsequent 1975 BBC film The Naked Civil Servant, he became famous internationally. Although Mr. Crisp passed away on November 21, 1999, many people around the world continue to be inspired by his life and legend.

www.Crisperanto.org website includes an article especially written for the Quentin Crisp Archives by Guy Kettelhack, editor of Mr. Crispıs book The Wit and Wisdom of Quentin Crisp. Mr. Kettelhack's essay can be read at www.crisperanto.org/memories. Photographs and a description of the memorial celebration can also be viewed at the memories pages.

Visit the on-line exhibition, Quentin Crisp: London & New York, for photographs illustrating his life in both England and America. The art exhibit, originally staged in November 2000, commemorated the first anniversary of Quentin Crispıs death. Access the art exhibit at www.crisperanto.org/pictures.

Also at Crisperanto.org's picture pages, you can discover original drawings by Quentin Crisp, special downloads and various tidbits. And you can see Mr. Crispıs wax model at Madame Tussaud's Times Square Museum at www.crisperanto.org/news

Orlando Chapter of the Oral Majority

Activist Bob Kunst hopes to be Florida's next governor I write representing the Orlando Chapter of the Oral Majority/Kunst for Governor!

We are newly formed with Ms. Allene Baus as Treasurer, Ms. Jan Smith as Secretary, myself as President.

We have made the determination to inform ALL other Oral Majority folk nationally of our efforts, the purpose being to stimulate ideas and activities among you and to encourage you to share ideas and activities that might be of help to us.

We also can share concerns and the urgent information on correctly running such campaign within our chapters. My feeling is that this will help to unite us as well, in this trememdously important goal; namely "Kunst for Governor", "No More Bushit", and "Uncoup the Coup"!

We involved ourselves with the United Way/Salvation Army issue and last week-end we, with Democratic Party Head Orange County, Mr. Doug Head, hosted a successful fund-raiser at which Bob was the sole speaker. It was wonderful!

We slowly are making "noises" within the media, and are working on getting Bob into the community; e.g., the Hispanic community, Black community, the unions, the colleges.

As you may know, in order to be named in the primary, Bob must raise $10,000 of political support. My chapter has some concerns about the need to raise this amount IMMEDIATELY! Why? Basically it is because "money makes money". If we achieve that, there will be increased financial support, undoubtedly, for his candidacy. We need that soon. Bob says he needs one million to win the race.

The national/state Oral Majority groups together could achieve raising the $10,000 which Bob could not use for anything besides this campaign requirement. Sometime during the next month and a half we, here plan a spaghetti dinner at the home of Jan Smith. Jan is contributing the entire dinner including her production of this fund-raising event. This is JUST the Beginning!

Lets be in touch!

With Hope,
Lynne Elisabeth Owens

An Affair or a Murder?

I'm no particular Condit fan, but having an affair with someone is not the same as murdering her. There are two issues here: What happened to Ms. Levy? Did Condit have a sexual relationship with her? The answer to the first question is what a journalist, like the police, should be seeking to answer. Digging into the second question as Connie Chung so insistently did in her interview amounts to voyeurism. Our Jerry Springer/Jenny Jones (dare I say Maury Povich?) culture, unfortunately, has difficulty distinguishing between the two questions. Rep. Gary Condit: Suspect or victim of the media?

Of course, it's material for the police to inquire into the life of a missing person in order to find clues. And Condit, from what has been made public, provided all sorts of information, hardly impeding the investigation from the outset. He told police Levy spent the night at his place the night before her disappearance (he didn't deny that), that she'd called him, etc. He said they could fill in the blanks about the "relationship," which seems rather understandable. Why do they need to know how many times or in what positions they had sex? The fact that Condit's girlfriend disappeared does not mean that he must give up all of his privacy.

Having said all that, I think that, as unjust as it may be, Condit's effectiveness as a member of the House has been seriously compromised and he should not run for re-election. Although he has loads of support in his district, he probably wouldn't win anyway -- and he'll be an albatross around the neck of the Democratic party nationally in 2002. (I can just imagine the GOP "family values" ads now with not so subtle references to Condit.)
