Retention of Status Quo Beliefs

heromag.jpg - 11.10 K When I was growing up in Utah, my perception of gay life was that gay men were promiscuous, anti-family and that it was all about gay bars and cruising …When I finally 'came out' to myself, I realized there was a whole lot more to being gay than the stereotypes. I realized I didn't have to change any of the values or beliefs that I held about families, relationships and commitments just because I was gay.

Sam Francis—25-year-old publisher of Hero magazine—Salt Lake Tribune,January 3

This is Me!

Exposing his genitals to police as a means of identification did not work for a young Wainuiomata man early on New Year's Day.

Police were speaking to Gabriel David Wharepapa, 19, in Wellington's Frank Kitts Park and wanted to see some identification.

Wharepapa became abusive, hiked up his shirt, pulled down his trousers, grabbed his genitals, and told police that if they wanted his identification, this was it.

Police were not amused and hauled him off to the police station

Newtering Family Values

newtsmall.jpg - 7.88 K Even as he was in the midst of a five year affair with a Capitol Hill aide, Callista Bisek, Newt dedicated his 1998 book, "Lessons Learned the Hard Way" to his wife, Marianne, and praised her as "the woman I love…my best friend and closest advisor." Ouch.

Marital Sanctity Means
the Back of the Bus?

It's an attempt to provide equal opportunities without invading the sanctity of marriage…Hopefully, it's a compromise that won't offend the religious groups opposed (to gay marriage) and at the same time provide the equal opportunities that (gay and lesbians) want.

Vermont Sen. Vincent Illuzzi (Republican)—introducing a Domestic Partnership alternative to same sex marriage-- Keene Sentinel, January 4

A Straight Thinker

vermontgaycouple.jpg - 12.66 K It seems ludicrous to me to have the exact same listing of rights and benefits for same sex and heterosexual couples, but have different names for the commitment process…I predict that a strictly semantic differentiation will please no one in the end and be extremely unwieldy as well.

Vermont Sen. Jeb Spaulding (Democrat)—in a letter to his collegues on Domestic Partnership as an alternative to same-sex marriage—January 6

Simon Nkoli and the New Millennium

We focus particular attention on Simon Nkoli, the late South African anti-apartheid, gay rights, and AIDS activist, as an authentic voice of gay aspirations as we face a new millennium. Nkoli's two decades of struggle not only linked him to some of the most important issues of his day, it also ensured that the vision of society embraced by the new South Africa included a constitutional guarantee of equal rights for lesbians and gay men, something found nowhere else on earth. As it moved to put the stain of apartheid behind it, South Africa also moved to the vanguard of the worldwide effort to recognize the common humanity of lesbians and gay men.

A Dog's Life

labrettalking.jpg - 14.75 K That's the thing about being born a Labrador Retriever—you were born for fun. Seldom was your loopy, free-wheeling mind cluttered by contemplation, and never at all by somber worry; every day was a romp. What else could there possibly be to life? Eating was a thrill…And everywhere you went were gullible human beings who patted and hugged and fussed over you.

Carl Hiaasen—Sick Puppy, published by Alfred A. Knopf

George W. Bush:
Playing the Anti-Gay Card

Weekly Standard publisher Bill Kristol was the first to publicly connect Bush's answer on Meet the Press to his campaign's attempts to use McCain's meeting with Log Cabin Republicans against him…Now relying on unnamed sources, Kristol said he believed the Bush campaign was already trying to curry favor with South Carolina conservatives by getting out the word about McCain's meeting with Log Cabin Republicans.

gore2000.jpg - 8.71 K Joint Chiefs of Staff
Must Support Gays in the Military

I think that would require those who wanted to serve on the Joint Chiefs to be in agreement with that policy…I would insist before appointing anybody to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that that individual support my policy, and yes, I would make that a requirement.

Vice President Al Gore -- Democratic contender for the Presidency, speaking at The University of New Hampshire, January 5

Military Chiefs Must Be Loyal to Their Commander

My sense is that when you're president of the United States, military people are loyal to their commander in chief whatever the policy of the commander in chief calls for the country, and that's what I'd expect them to do if I'm president of the United States and we move toward gays in the military.

Former Senator Bill Bradley -- Democratic contender for the Presidency, speaking at The University of New Hampshire, January 5
