Mississippi Proposes Boner Police

There's a new contender for the year's dumbest proposed law: A bill in Mississippi that would make it a crime -- punishable by a year in jail – for a man who is, ahem, sexually aroused (but fully clothed) to appear in public.

"Talk about hitting below the belt!" said George Getz, Libertarian Party press secretary. "Are phallic felonies really so frequent in Mississippi that the state needs a Private Parts Police to patrol men's underwear?"

Military Foot Fetishes

A female recruit at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, was fined $194 and placed on two weeks restriction for 'wrongfully allowing a soldier of the opposite sex to massage your feet.' …What would be the penalty for wrongfully allowing a soldier of the same sex to massage your feet? Being kicked out of the army???

GOP Conventional Wisdom: Americans Are Dumb

(The New Hampshire primary) crushed an old conventional wisdom within the GOP that has largely kept us from the White House for a decade, that Republicans need to run to the right in the primaries and then run back to the middle in the general election. It was built on an assumption that the American people are largely uninformed, have short memories and are generally dumb enough to fall for it.

larrykramernew.jpg - 9.82 K Dear Dreher:
You and Gary Bauer might think twice about trying to turn Dan Savage's heroic attempt to demand equality and fight for his and every gay person's rights into a legal mess. Quite frankly every gay in America is chomping at the bit to go after Gary Bauer, a hateful weasel, an unChristian cur, if ever there was one. Being hated by the straight white man who wants to be our president is a great motivator. If this goes to court, if Iowa and Bauer and the Religious Right makes this into the mess you are egging them on to do, well all I can say is 1) I and millions of others can hardly wait; and 2) you ain't seen nothin' yet. You are playing with dynamite and quite frankly we have been waiting for just such a fuse as this to be lit. If Dan Savage wasn't a hero before, you are on your way into making him a major one. Keep on trucking!

I'm no Bauer fan, but... Do you really think that trying to make one's political opponents physically ill as a form of protest is humane, decent or acceptable? Do you really think this kind of thing forwards the cause of gay rights? Do you really believe this kind of hateful attack will make the masses more likely to favor gay rights, or will it (as Camille Paglia and others have noted) reinforce negative stereotypes about gays as malicious disease-spreaders out to physically hurt those who disagree with them? And do you really believe this kind of thing won't inspire right-wing crazies to attack gay-rights organizations and gay-friendly politicians in the same way? And: are you threatening me?

Enter Camille, again

Whatever Bauer's peculiarities and hypocrisies, however, he did not deserve the vicious stunt played on his campaign headquarters by gay writer Dan Savage who boasts in Salon that he smeared his own saliva over doorknobs and telephones in an attempt to spread the flu. I agree with the outraged letter writers who pointed out that the likely victims of this act would have been the innocent janitorial staff -- the authentic proletarians who are of course invisible to elitist liberals blinded by their sanctimonious sense of moral superiority.
