Gay 'AIDS Czar' on the Boy Scouts

severtz.jpg - 4.93 K On the issue of the Boy Scouts and gays Evertz thought the Supreme Court got it right, and wrote in an opinion piece that "in this case [the religious right's] paranoia is not entirely unwarranted" when they opine that it's "just another step in a slippery slope towards forcing churches and religious organizations to accept gay men and lesbians against their wills."

Michelangelo Signorile—“The Instant 'AIDS Czar' www.gay,com April 11

Suffer Little Children to Come Unto the White House

Children attending the annual White House Easter Egg Roll--a custom that dates from the 1870s--will be frisked for stun guns by the Secret Service…Even balloons are banned, presumably because a balloon popping could be mistaken for gunfire.

Laura Peek—“ Toddlers will be frisked at egg race”—The Times, London, April 13

Emotional Dimwits

Now, four years after undergoing gender-correction surgery, Deirdre has an unusual perspective on the differences between men and women and the societal constructs of gender. Deirdre cries more than Donald did. She believes men are sexually intriguing and emotionally dim.

Andrew Sullivan Opposes Employment Protection?

asullivan.jpg - 17.09 K I take issue with some of Andrew Sullivan's points in "All in the Family" (Feb. 12). First, if an employment anti-discrimination law helps one gay person, what harm does it do? Why shouldn't gays be a protected class until bigotry disappears?

Kevin E. Davis— "Overextended family"--Letters to the Editor— The New Republic, March 19

Forgive Him for He Know Not What He Doeth

The leader of a group trying to repeal Broward County's gay-rights law resigned Monday, citing a Herald report that he was charged in 1999 with sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl in Maryland.

A Gay Man Who Loved Barbie

When Barbie hit the market in 1959, girls' and boys' life options were as different as the toys they received. Boys got BB guns, and girls got Betsy Wetsy. Boys got Hot Wheels. Girls got Barbie. No surprise, then, that a style-conscious boy might carry unfulfilled childhood desires into adulthood. Unleashed, those desires ruled Steve's life. "I didn't stop for ten years," says Steve, whose collection mushroomed to almost 400 dolls. "I kept five of them in a safe deposit box because they were worth a total of $45,000."

One Reason Bush 'Won' Florida

In all, some 200,000 Floridians were either not permitted to vote in the November 7 election on questionable or possibly illegal grounds, or saw their ballots discarded and not counted. A large and disproportionate number were black.

Scientologist in a Sauna?

The remaining man was sitting naked, facing me. When I looked up, I saw it was John Travolta. I was shocked to see his manhood sticking straight up in the air. I couldn't believe it. He was looking up my towel and between my legs. Then, he looked straight at me and our eyes met. He gestured with his head as if to say 'hi" and gave me a big smile.

David Thompson—"Gay Hunk: John Travolta Tried to Pick Me Up"—The Globe, April 10

Moon over the Miami Herald

Anyone who thinks the latest review by The Miami Herald and USA Today established a Bush victory is as mistaken as those who take his fiscal figuring at face value. It's true that The Herald reported on April 4 that its recount favored Mr. Bush. It's also true that The Herald published a second article on April 5 showing how Al Gore really won.

Joe Conason—“Numbers Don't Add Up in Bush's White House”—New York Observer, April 13
