Outs John Gielgud

He isn't soft on the one big scandal in Gielgud's life: his arrest for soliciting in a Chelsea lavatory and, wanting anonymity, telling the beak he is Arthur Gielgud, self-employed clerk. He became headlines. "Well, John what a silly bugger you've been," Dame Sybil Thorndike tells him. Noël Coward writes in his diary: "Poor, silly, idiotic, foolish, careless John ... how could he have been so stupid and selfish?"…Neither does Morley let Alec Guinness off the hook. He outs him as bisexual. Arrested for a homosexual act in a public lavatory, he gave his name as Herbert Pocket and the press never latched on. So why out him now, because he is dead and can't retaliate? "Oh, no, to show how stupid John was and how clever Alec."

Where Have all the Condoms Gone?

Local health officials and AIDS service organizations have inexplicably abandoned the strategy of placing large jars in bars stocked with latex condoms, water-based lube and prevention information. These life-saving materials are instead available under a hit-or-miss program, whereby paid workers from local agencies personally hand out safe sex packets, on rotating nights, in various local gay bars and clubs.

Focus on the Family Promotes Ornamental Masculinity

He offered the parents, teachers, and school counselors in the audience a list of the warning signs of "pre-homosexuality," which, for boys, included having a sensitive temperament, being aesthetically inclined, and responding strongly to either well- or badly dressed women. Janelle Hallman, a daintily attired therapist, gave a parallel accounting of tomboy red flags, which included wearing army boots…What to do with a fashion-obsessed sissy boy? Nicolosi recommended corrective nudging toward macho recklessness. When an audience member worried that such an approach might stifle a budding artist or performer, the therapist responded that a boy wouldn't necessarily have to give up piano entirely; he could simply tickle the ivories a little less and toss the football a little more.

But Sadly, Last Fall…

The right to vote is a fundamental cornerstone of our democracy; indeed, it is the very foundation upon which our democracy is built. But sadly, last fall, that cornerstone was chipped and badly broken when millions of Americans were either ignored, disregarded or shut out of the democratic process.

U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.)-"Election Reform"-June 21

Guns & Marketing in a Voracious Display Culture

The society that Williams and Malcolm X inhabited in the sixties could still be confronted because it still knew how to be offended. But how much would any pose, however hostile, however threatening, however mocking, protect against a voracious display culture capable of seizing upon any pose and marketing it? What security would a brandished weapon offer once an image industry recognized the sales potential of black-male hostility that could be retailed as a style to suburban white teens? The gun then became but another glittery object drawing media attention and Hollywood interest. What got you arrested on the street was glamorous on-screen.

What Bush Saw in
President Putin's Soul

On Monday Vladimir Putin's prosecutors brought criminal charges against the director of a small television station that has been a last-ditch refuge for independent journalists driven out of the NTV network this year. On Tuesday, his police raided the offices of Echo of Moscow, an independent radio station that is the final remnant of the NTV empire not yet crushed or taken over by Mr. Putin's cronies. While this was going on, Mr. Putin himself was delivering another defiant and dissembling statement about Chechnya, declaring in front of French President Jacques Chirac that the persistent Chechen resistance to his brutal military campaign there was the work of "foreign mercenaries who have large quantities of heroin." In New York, meanwhile, Mr. Putin's ambassador was single-handedly blocking a revamping of U.N. sanctions against Iraq, thwarting the Bush administration's high-profile attempt to stop the rehabilitation of Saddam Hussein.
