A Retrograde Salvation Army Rule

The Salvation Army is an institution that performs good works, and it is entitled to its views of homosexuality and any other subject under the sun. But it is not entitled to have those views made public policy. The retrograde rule that the Salvation Army would have had the president issue -- and that has now rightly been rejected -- is the very opposite of the position the government should take. The White House seeks to strengthen the case for its faith-based initiative. But this episode constitutes instead a reminder of the pitfalls of the undertaking.
