12th Annual Lambda
Literary Award Finalists

Compiled by GayToday

The Lambda Literary Foundation has announced this year's Lambda Literary Awards finalists. The Lammys, the most prestigious and comprehensive gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender literary awards in the country, honor books for their excellence and vision.

On June 1st, 2000, in Chicago—the eve of Book Expo America—over 100 authors, editors, and visual artists will receive Lammys from over twenty categories. Also attending the gala evening will be representatives from virtually every North American publisher participating in the glbt book industry, publicists and agents, booksellers and book lovers, and artists and personalities from throughout the glbt community.

This year's roster of authors reads like a who's who of the publishing industry. Many of the writers who established glbt literature are represented, including science fiction master Samuel Delany, historian Karla Jay, Eleanor Roosevelt biographer Blanche Wiesen Cook, and novelist Andrew Holleran.

The continuing vitality of the field is demonstrated by the number of authors enjoying their first book publication, such as novelists Elizabeth Stark and Henry Flesh, and poets Mark Wunderlich and Marvin K. White. The popularity of many of this year's finalists has placed them on the 1999 best seller lists, including Michael Thomas Ford's humorous That's Mr. Faggot to You, Brad Gooch's self-help The Boyfriend Within, and Sleeping Bones, Katherine V. Forrest's most recent Kate Delafield mystery. Will this year's Lammy winners ratify national sales figures, or will the seventy authors and publishing industry professionals serving as judges choose differently? Will R.D. Zimmerman win a Lammy for a second year in a row, this time for the mystery Innuendo? David Leddick for The Homoerotic Art of Pavel Tchelitchev? Joan Nestle for the Vintage Book of International Lesbian Fiction?

The Lambda Literary Awards program has a rigorous three-tier selection process. First, a list of nominees is assembled from thousands of nomination forms distributed nationwide. The nominated titles, which this year numbered over a thousand, are narrowed down by a finalist committee that includes book professionals and members of the glbt press. homoeroticart.jpg - 14.10 K Cover of The Homoerotic Art of Pavel Tchelitchev

Seventy judges representing a broad cross-section of our literary community then select a single book to win the Lammy in each of twenty categories. Past winners include Edmund White, Dorothy Allison, Audre Lorde, Paul Monette, and Jeanette Winterson, to name a few.

"We saw a gay publishing boom in the '90s with the National Book Awards recognizing writers such as Dorothy Allison and Paul Monette, and Michael Cunningham's winning of a Pulitzer prize. If the Gay '90s have been any indication, the next millennium will see ever greater recognition of our achievements," said publisher Jim Marks.

This year's awards presentation will be preceded by Lammy finalists events in readings in San Francisco (April 13, at the San Francisco Main Public Library), Los Angeles (April 19), and Chicago (April 28, at the Gerber-Hart Library).

The winners will be announced at a gala event to be held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, IL, on June 1, 2000. Tickets are $100 each ($75 if purchased before March 1). Additional Lammy readings will be held in Washington, D.C. (June 7), New York (June 15), and Philadelphia (June 17).

The Lambda Literary Foundation would like to thank the industry professionals who helped with the finalist selection process as either committee members or consultants: Christopher Bram, author Father of Frankenstein; M.A, Bronski, author and cultural critic; Michael Thomas Ford, author and syndicated columnist; Kent Fordyce, Lambda Rising Books; Richard Labonté, A Different Light Books; Loralee MacPike, Lesbian Review of Books; Lisa C.
