Deaf Lesbian Couple Attempt
Birthing of a Deaf Child

Compiled by GayToday

Washington, D.C.--In a cover story for its Sunday magazine the Washington Post featured an 11-page profile of a deaf lesbian couple who've done all that's currently possible to ensure that their newborn son will be deaf too.

Sharon Duchesneau and her partner Candace McCullough, specifically sought out a sperm donor with a history of deafness in his family to increase the chances of their son being deaf.

The Post, reporting in detail on the boy's birth, noted that he seems healthy in every way. But whether he's been born deaf will not be known for at least three months when sophisticated technology will tell.

The Religious Right, including its pawns, the American Family Association and the Family Research Council are moving to use the Post story as a battering ram against gay and lesbian equality.

Scott Miller, gay newsfeed commentator, predicts "that this case will be sensationalized all over the right-wing talk show circuit."

Ken Connor, president of the Family Research Council, has already attacked the deaf couple:

"This couple has effectively decided that their desire to have a deaf child is of more concern to them than is the burden they are placing on their son…To intentionally give a child a disability, in addition to all the disadvantages that come as a result of being raised in a homosexual household, is incredibly selfish."
