Boxer Lennox Lewis Cheered by Gays in Memphis

Compiled By GayToday

Memphis, Tennessee--Lennox Lewis was cheered by gay and feminist supporters as he paraded through the streets of Memphis tonight (Friday 31 May). They were rooting for Lewis to "knock out Tyson the homophobe and sexist."

The two fighters battle for the world heavyweight boxing crown at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis next Saturday, June 8.

Members of an ad hoc coalition of local women's and gay groups joined 2,000 well-wishers who surrounded Lewis on Memphis's historic Beale Street. They cheered Lewis, made V for victory signs, and held up placards emblazoned with the words:

"Victory to Lewis! Defeat Tyson's homophobia" and "Knock out Tyson's sexism & homo hatred".

Lewis responded to the group's support with smiles and waves.

Tonight's action was the first of five protests planned against Tyson in the run up to his world title fight with Lewis.

The Memphis protests are being coordinated by British human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell who flew into Memphis last Tuesday.

"Tyson's repeated homophobic insults are unacceptable in boxing or any other sport", said Mr. Tatchell. "We want Tyson to stop his anti-gay taunts and sexist jibes. His bigoted attitudes incite violence against women and gays".

"Tyson should do the decent thing and express his regret for causing offence. A statement supporting the human rights of women and gay people would be a good move".
