Association Meets in Florida

Compiled By GayToday

Fort Lauderdale--The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) recently completed its annual IGLTA World Convention here, June 21-24, 2002.

Over 200 delegates representing major airlines, hotels, travel agencies and other travel companies from around the world attended the event which was hosted in part by the Embassy Suites Hotel, and sponsored among other supporters by the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureaus (CVBs).
The owner of the Royal Palms Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Richard Gray, was inducted into IGLTA's Hall of Fame during the groups convention

Highlights included the Keynote Speaker Mike Wilke of The Commercial Closet Association, a panel discussion by Cruise Line Executives as well as educational break-out sessions.

Delegates were treated to offerings of Ft. Lauderdale's finer food and entertainment venues. On the final evening there was a celebration of IGLTA members' achievements and their goals attained. The new Board was also presented to the delegates as was the announcement of a Regional Office newly opened in Europe.

The "Presidents Award" went to the Treasurer, Geoff Carey of Valet Travel in San Diego for outstanding service and commitment both to IGLTA and it's members.

Inducted into IGLTA's "Hall of Fame" was long time IGLTA member Richard Gray of the Royal Palms Resort. Richard had been a board member for 8 years, re-elected several times and was also the Host Chairperson for this Convention.

The Board recognized Richard's outstanding contributions and leadership within the Gay & Lesbian Community, especially in Fort Lauderdale where he represents the Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB in Gay & Lesbian matters. His involvement with IGLTA members around the world is a proud matter of record, say members.

The IGLTA announced at its Convention a new award that will recognize a worthy charity in each destination that the annual Convention is being held for that year. A check was thus passed to "Tuesday's Angels" the charity nominated by the Fort Lauderdale host committee. This activity will now become one of IGLTA's regular charity presentations which are part of the celebrations of the World Conference held every year.

Delegates have been asking for the latest information on "Gay Games" being held this year in Australia and IGLTA members can participate by registering for the special IGLTA event being held in Melbourne prior to the opening ceremonies - bookings are excellent for this unusual happening down under.
