Northern Ireland First Minister will block same-sex marriage for five years as people keep sending her ‘online abuse’

Same-sex marriage will not come to Northern Ireland for five years as pro-gay people keep sending homophobic politicians hate online, according to First Minister Arlene Foster.

The leader of the DUP, the party that keeps blocking same-sex marriage in government, has said they will continue using a petition of concern to block any change to the marriage law.

Foster claims her party is not homophobic, but said ‘very, very vicious’ online abuse from LGBTI activists demanding a law change is making it less likely for the DUP to support marriage for gay couples any sooner.

‘If activists want to have a conversation about where they are coming from, do they seriously think they are going to influence me by sending me abuse?’ Foster said.

‘No, they are not going to influence me by sending me abuse – in fact, they are going to send me in the opposite direction and people need to reflect on that.’

Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK, as well as Ireland itself, to not allow same-sex marriage. Attempts from the opposing party have been repeatedly blocked by the DUP.
