Log Cabin Republicans defend Trump’s first 100 days

America’s largest group of LGBTI conservatives, the Log Cabin Republicans, have defended Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office and gave him an A-.

‘Trump’s first 100 days in office have been something of a mixed bag in regard to LGBT issues, but that was to be expected considering his concurrent outreach to evangelicals and to LGBT voters during his campaign,’  Gregory T. Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, said.

‘There has been a lot of hand-wringing about a number of ‘non-troversies’ over the past three months — fake news stories about the White House ‘erasing’ gay people from the Census and the White House website, which were nothing more than fundraising ploys to rile up dejected LGBT liberals still reeling from Hillary Clinton’s loss.’

Last summer, LCR said the Republican platform was ‘the most anti-LGBT… in the party’s 162 year history’. They refused to officially endorse Trump in September.

But now, in an opinion piece for The New York Times, Angelo writes: ‘While President Trump’s record so far may be murky, he has made pro-LGBT policy a matter of record.’

He is referring to claims that Trump will make HIV/AIDS programs the ‘highest priority’ in his budget and his intent to preserve an executive order maintaining LGBTI nondiscrimination in federal contracting.

While these issues may or may not be on the docket for the future, Trump has has made numerous decisions during this first 10 days that either directly or indirectly affect LGBTI people.

For instance, eliminating protective guidance for transgender students, erasing LGBTI people from a survey of older adults, dropping lawsuits which combat harmful ‘bathroom bills,’ and reinstating a global gag rule that would reduce funding abroad for comprehensive healthcare including HIV treatment.

Additionally, the GOP is still pushing Trump to sign the ‘Religious Liberty’ order, which if signed, could legalize discrimination of LGBTI people on the basis of religious freedom.

‘One hundred days of Trump translates into 100 days of erasure for the LGBTQ community,’ says Sarah Kate Ellis, President of GLAAD.

‘From the Census exclusion, to rescinding Obama’s guidance for trans youth in schools, and lack of any LGBTQ mentions on the White House website, he has spent the early days of his administration trying to remove us from the very fabric of this country, and we must resist.’
