Missouri lawmaker’s shocking claim: There’s a ‘distinction’ between gays and human beings

Missouri lawmaker Rick Brattin thinks there is a distinction between gay people and human beings.

Brattin, 36, made the shocking claim while speaking in the Missouri House of Representatives against an amendment to a bill aimed at protecting LGBTI people from discrimination.

Brattin argued the amendment would infringe on religious liberty.

‘When you look at the tenets of religion, of the Bible, of the Qu’ran, of other religions, there is a distinction between homosexuality and just being a human being,’ Brattin said.

In an editorial, the Kansas City Star called Brattin’s statement ‘deplorable.’

‘It betrayed a stunning lack of understanding of theology and self-government: The Constitution protects all Americans from the tyranny of any single faith-based approach to secular law,’ the paper writes.

The amendment failed to garner enough votes or passage.

Brattin is currently serving his third term representing Missouri’s 55th Legislative District which encompasses several suburbs of Kansas City in Cass County including Raymore, Peculiar, and Lake Winnebago.
