WATCH: Georgia congressional candidate Karen Handel tells mom of LGBTI child that her ‘faith’ calls her to stop same-sex adoption

Karen Handel is the Republican candidate for Georgia’s 6th Congressional district. With the election to take place on Tuesday 20 June, Handel took part in a meet-and-greet on 16 June at a local sandwich shop.

A mother of a lesbian daughter spoke to Handel about her stance on LGBTI rights. In particular, she wanted to know about her daughter’s rights when it came to adopting children.

‘What protections do I have for her having a family in the future, wanting to adopt a kid?’ the mother asked.

‘I have to be honest,’ Handel replied. ‘My faith calls me to a different place on the issue.’ She went on to call her faith ‘compassionate.’

‘I’m not aware of anything in the law, right now, that I’m aware of, that’s going to be impactful, from a discriminatory standpoint, against your daughter,’ Handel told the woman.

After citing the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage, Handel abruptly ended the conversation without giving the woman a clear answer.

When Handel ran for Governor of Georgia in 2009, she said she would consider taking steps to stop same-sex couples from adopting children.
