Donald Trump bans trans people from serving in ‘any capacity’ in the US military

Donald Trump has banned transgender people from serving in ‘any capacity’ in the US military.

He has blamed the ‘medical costs and disruption’ they would cause to the armed forces.

Making the announcement on Twitter, he said: ‘

‘After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to  serve in any capacity in the US Military.

‘Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.’

It is a further set back against Obama’s rules that loosened restrictions on transgender people serving in the US military.

This also comes weeks after Trump’s Defense Secretary James Mattis said the Pentagon was giving the military another six months to conduct a review to determine if allowing trans people to enlist in the armed services would impact its ‘readiness and lethality’.

The announcement has already seen the US president condemned for his decision.

‘You don’t know anything about service. Shame on you,’ grassroots group Vets against Trump said.

‘You are dishonoring people who, unlike you, actually donned the uniform to serve their nation.

‘This is yet another vicious attack on our troops from an illegitimate “leader” who only uses military and veterans as political props.

‘The greatest “burden” on our military is a reckless, ignorant CIC who dishonors the office and actively undermines our national security.

‘Attacking our trans sisters and brothers in uniform is an attack on us all.’

Around 12,000 transgender individuals currently serve in the US military.

Last year, Trump claimed he would ‘fight’ for the LGBTI community in the run up to the US election.

He has so far has failed to live up to that promise.
