8 out of 10 syphilis cases in Scotland are gay and bisexual men

Scotland has had a shocking rise in the number of syphilis cases among gay and bisexual men.

The rate of infection is now at 90% among men.

New syphilis diagnoses rose 13% in 2016 with 356. This is the highest number Scotland has seen since 1952.

The number doubled between 2014 and 2015, from 159 to 316.

Men who have casual unprotected sex are said to be the cause behind the increase.

295 of the cases involved gay and bisexual men.

19 said they had between 10 and 20 sexual partners in the last three months. Six of them claimed to have had more than 20.

The majority (195) said though they had been with fewer than five.

27 of them said they had between five and nine.

The remaining number did not provide an estimate.

‘Men who have sex with men are disproportionately affected by STIs’

Most cases involving straight people said they had four or fewer partners.

Health Protection Scotland says this trend mirrors that of in London and England as a whole…..
