This trans girl is dedicating her Quinceañera to her trans godmothers in this new HBO documentary

Zoey is a transgender girl. She is dedicating her quinceañera to her trans godmothers that never got to experience a celebration like this of their own.

15: A Quinceañera Story is an upcoming HBO docu-series. It follows several young Latina girls in the United States as they prepare for their quinceañras.

Quinceañeras are a Latin American tradition celebrating a girl’s 15th birthday.

The Series

The series is made up of four short films airing on four consecutive nights beginning 19 December. The debut episode is about Zoey, the Mexican-American girl celebrating her birthday in south Los Angeles with the help of the older trans women in her life.

‘When Zoey first transitioned, the older trans women started to meet her,’ Zoey’s mother explains in the trailer. ‘These women didn’t get to celebrate their quinceañera.’

The series is produced by music industry veteran Tommy Mottola and is directed by Emmy winner Matthew O’Neill and Mexican Grammy-winning musician Thalía Sodi.

‘It was a dream that I pursued for years and I was finally able to make it a reality with HBO,’ Sodi told People Chica. ‘It took us almost three years to develop my ideas, find our girls, follow their stories and edit the best moments to create this original series that presents our Hispanic culture to new audiences.’

‘We found ourselves reflecting stories of deportation or acceptance of gender change, as in the case of Zoey,’ Sodi explains. ‘She was born male and we witness the support and unconditional love of her trans-madrinas [godmothers], who never had their quinceañera.’
