Foreigners charged for ‘producing pornography’ near sacred site in Cambodia

Almost 90 foreigners were detained in Cambodia for engaging in ‘porn dancing’ at a party in the northern western city of Siem Reap.

Local police, along with provincial anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection police raided the villa where the photos were taken on Thursday (25 January).

It was alleged the people involved allegedly posed in sex positions at a party called ‘Let’s Get Wet’.

Police detained 87 foreigners but released 77 tourists after they received an education in Khmer traditions and values.

Ten of those detained were charged with producing pornography. If found guilty they could face up to one year in a Cambodian jail.

The nationalities of the ten arrested were five British nationals, two Canadians, one Norwegian, one New Zealander and one from the Netherlands.

‘This villa, where events called Pub Crawl or Let’s Get Wet took place, was rented by foreign tourists who went there to drink and take part in sexy porn dances,’ the police report read.

‘The organisers required customers pay from $10 to $15 each for one time.’

Bikinis are not pornograpy

The lawyer for the 10 foreigners arrested have not yet provided him with the evidence of their crime.

‘They were having a party in their place where there is a swimming pool. For me, just wearing a bikini is not a pornographic activity,’ he told the Phnom Penh Post.

One of those arrested told the BBC around 30 police officers conducted the ‘confusing’ raid. Those detained were also reportedly told to sign documents in the national language of Khmer which they could not understand.

‘They raided, rounded us up, there was about 80 to 100 people at this party, some of them were tourists,’ they said.

Tourists behaving badly

Siem Reap is a popular tourist destination in Cambodia as it is close to the Angkor Wat temples. It is also becoming a popular destination for gay tourists.

It is not the first time foreigners have acted inappropriately in South East Asia.

American husbands Travis and Joseph Dasilva were arrested and deported from Thailand for posing in a photo with their butts exposed.
