Mother’s emotional letter to Kinky Boots cast gives hope for the future

A mother shared her experience of taking her daughter to see Kinky Boots on Broadway. She wrote a letter to the cast and it’s truly inspiring.

Orchestrator Stephen Oremus, who won a Tony Award for his work on the show, shared the letter on Instagram.

The mother explains she went to take her daughter to a Broadway show over the holiday break.

She ended up using Broadway Roulette to get tickets. The system is relatively straight-forward, as explained — people pay a flat fee and then get tickets to a random show on a date of their choosing.

Then things get emotional.

The letter

“That morning, as we were getting ready to leave, I got a text saying that they spun the Roulette Wheel and it landed on Kinky Boots. I have to be honest with you, I was a little nervous. I was taking my ten-year-old daughter to see Kinky Boots? Of all the possibilites on Broadway at the moment, we got Kinky Boots? The entire bus ride into the city, I was thinking, would this be appropriate? Am I making a mistake? This show is about drag queens, how am I going to explain this to my daughter?

We take our seats (which were AWESOME by the way) and as the orchestra began to play I held my breath. For the next few hours my child was mesmerized. As the cast sang the final number I had tears streaming down my face. Not only was this an appropriate show for my daughter, it was the BEST show for my daughter to see.

In a world where kids are bullied every day, the message of your show is to celebrate what makes us different and unique. I cannot imagine a better message to send to my daughter than one of acceptance and tolerance. (Yes, I did have to answer a number of questions on the bus ride home — much to the chagrin of the elderly lady sitting across from us — but it was totally worth it.)

To this day when my daughter mentions the show I still get teary eyed. Thank you for helping me show my daughter what it means to be a good person and a good citizen. To paraphrase your show, you all helped me show her that when someone struggles to step, you lend a helping hand, and when someone hits the dust, you raise them up. Valuable lessons I wish everyone would learn. Thank you for one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had with my daughter. You are all an inspiration to me each and every day.”

Oremus called the letter beautiful and a reminder of the power of theater.
