Eric Radford hangs out with Gus Kenworthy in Pyeongchang

Gold medal winning gay figure skater Eric Radford has posted a photo of himself in Pyeongchang in Gus Kenworthy.

Today he tweeted, ‘Finally got to meet the man! Was fun talking with @guskenworthy and visiting the Pride house here in #Pyeongchang.’

Canada’s Radford made history in the Winter Olympics when he became the first openly gay male athlete to win a gold medal. He took the medal for his participation in the team skating event.

Radford followed it up with a bronze medal with his skating partner, Meagan Duham, in the pairs figure skating. He afterwards announced his retirement from competitive skating.

Kenworthy competed in the Winter Olympics men’s freestyle skiing. His performance may have been hampered by breaking his thumb in the days leading up to his appearance. He didn’t score a medal and came 12th. He later told the New York Times he’d still had an amazing experience.

‘If you look at me, I’m bummed but I’m not sulking, I’m not crying. Being out at these Games has kind of meant the world to me, just getting to really be myself and be authentic. And I think landing a run in the final and getting on the podium obviously would have been icing on the cake, but even though it didn’t happen for me I still had a wonderful Olympic experience.’

The US skier came out in an interview in 2015. He has since acted as an advocate for LGBTI rights, and images of him kissing his boyfriend after competing on the weekend were beamed around the world.

Winter Olympics Pride House

The Pride House is a new initiative to provide an LGBTI safe space at the Olympic games. The house in Pyeongchang looked set not to happen when local organizers were unable to raise sufficient funds to make it happen. However, at the 11th hour, the Canadian government stepped up to provide financial support for a Pride House in South Korea.
