The Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center is making this a gay holiday season

For the first time ever, the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in New York Center was donated by a same-sex, Latina couple.

Shirley Figueroa, who is retired, grew up in the Bronx with “no trees on my block.”

She and her wife, who are Puerto Rican, recently moved out of the city to a house that came with a 72-foot-tall Norway spruce.

A scout for the Rockefeller Center spotted the tree, and she agreed to donate it.

“Just the fact that I have a tree that I can donate when I came from somewhere that had no trees — it’s so surreal,” Figueroa said.

“We’re happy all around. We’re New Yorkers.”

Every year the Rockefeller Center gets a tree from a different place. According to the New York Times, this is the first time the tree was donated by a same-sex couple or a Latinx couple.

The tree will be on display until January 7, 2019.
