Gay man announces he will (likely) run for Mayor of New York City

Corey Johnson, the out speaker of the New York City Council, has announced that he is considering a run for mayor. Johnson would be the city’s first out gay mayor.

Former Democratic mayor Ed Koch never came out before his death in 2013.

“I am thinking about running for Mayor of New York City,” Johnson said in an email to supporters. “It’s a big decision, I know, but I love this City and am committed to making it a better place for all.”

“As much as I love New York, we are capable of so much more.”

Johnson, a staunch liberal, has pledged he will only allow campaign contributions up to $250 per person. City law allows candidates to rake in $2,000 per donor.

He has also pledged not to accept contributions from real estate companies, lobbying firms, or corporate PACs.

Current Mayor Bill de Blasio can’t run for re-election because of term limits.
