Puerto Rico’s governor signs new civil code removing LGBTQ discrimination protections

On Monday, Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced signed a new civil code that removed explicit non-discrimination protections for the island’s LGBTQ citizens.

“They removed the discrimination bans in order not to include sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Pedro Julio Serrano, founder of national LGBTQ rights organization Puerto Rico Para Tod@s.

Activists are still surveying other changes in the 600-page document that could affect LGBTQ people. The changes were approved in “less than 10 minutes” by the Senate and House of Representatives without any debate in mid-May. The changes remained largely unavailable for citizens to review in the lead-up to Vázquez signing them….
