LGBTI ally Meryl Streep to be honored by Human Rights Campaign

Meryl Streep may have three Oscars but she’s never been honored by the Human Rights Campaign.

That is about to change.

The great star will be presented with the organization’s Ally for Equality Award at the 2017 HRC Greater New York Gala on 11 February.

HRC President Chad Griffin had this to say about Streep in making the announcement today: ‘Throughout her phenomenal career, Meryl Streep has used her voice to stand up for the LGBTQ community. Whether through her iconic roles that raised the visibility of LGBTQ people, or by boldly speaking out for equality, Meryl Streep embodies the very nature of what it means to be an ally to our community.’

HRC is the largest LGBTI civil rights organization in the US.

Their Ally Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who use their voice to publicly stand-up for the LGBTI community.

Streep’s extensive film resume includes her Emmy-winning performance in the AIDS epic Angels in America.

She won Oscars for The Iron Lady, Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs. Kramer and has been nominated 16 other times – a record.
