See how the Pulse nightclub memorial is coming to life

The onePULSE foundation is officially breaking ground on an interim memorial for the Pulse nightclub on 26 February.

As explained by the foundation, this space ‘will give families, survivors, first responders, and the thousands of people who come each year space to pay their respects while planning and design of the permanent memorial are underway’.

The temporary memorial will include seating, trees, shade, and more for a peaceful area to remember and grieve.

Crews installed a rainbow crosswalk near the nightclub in October as a first step of the memorial.

Preserving the memories

The day before construction begins, the Orange County Regional History Center staff is going to collect the memorials left. This includes messages, art, artifacts, and more. The Center will carefully preserve and include them in the memorial.

‘June 12, 2016 was an historic day in Orlando’s history,’ said Pam Schwartz, Chief Curator of the History Center. ‘We are dedicated to ensuring that the lives taken, all those affected, and the outpouring of public support are not forgotten.

‘We will use the utmost care and sensitivity in preserving the items that were so lovingly created and placed here – they will be integral as the onePULSE Foundation plans the museum.’

Crews are also enhancing the original Pulse sign, but not removing it.

‘As we move to create a permanent memorial and museum,’ added onePULSE Foundation Executive Director Barbara Poma. ‘We also know the importance of ensuring the families, survivors, first responders, and the community continue to have a place to reflect on what happened here.’

Construction will finish at the end of April.

The foundation is a nonprofit managing the design, construction, and operation of a permanent museum and memorial to the Pulse tragedy.
