Watch RuPaul talk about drag career, his show and his impact

Drag queen icon RuPaul Charles, who gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday (16 March), was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning this week.

Reporter Nancy Giles talked to the 6 foot, 4 inch tall Charles to find out why he started wearing women’s clothing and the impact of his hit series RuPaul’s Drag Race.

‘This show is for the kids out there who are looking for some type of guidance,’ Charles said in the profile. ‘These kids on our show have been through hell, literally. Their families have thrown them out of the house. They’ve been abused and beaten up. But they have come through and shined. That is the lesson right there.’

Born RuPaul Andre Charles in 1960 in San Diego, he enjoyed dressing up from an early age, but had no idea how it would impact him.

‘I was always looking for the way to fit onto this planet,’ he said. ‘Through drag, I was able to find who I really am. Period. Drag was never about wanting to be like a woman. It was always about challenging identity values of society and saying, “I am whatever I put on”.’

Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2017. He never dreamed he would become the most recognized drag queen on the planet or have such an impact on others, but is willing to accept that mantle.

‘I didn’t set out to do that, but I was smart enough to realize this is my calling,’ he said. ‘You have to be open enough to hear the universe’s stage direction.’

The dedication ceremony unveiling RuPaul’s star (the 2,631^st star on the Walk of Fame) begins Friday at 11:30 a.m. at 6652 Hollywood Boulevard (at Cherokee Avenue), in front of the World of Wonder offices.

World of Wonder produces the RuPaul’s Drag Race television series, along with the spin-off series RuPaul’s Drag U and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars.
