Lord Ivar Mountbatten Marries James Coyle in British Royal Family’s First Gay Wedding

Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, who came out as gay in an article in the Mail on Sunday in September 2016, and made history as the first member of the Royal Family to come out of the closet, married his partner James Coyle on Saturday in the ruling British monarchy’s first same-sex wedding. Ivar is a a great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria. He met Coyle at Verbier, a resort in Switzerland.

Lord Ivar’s former wife Penny, who he divorced in 2011, gave him away at Mountbatten’s country estate in Devon, UK in  front of 60 guests including Ivar’s three daughters.

Wrote Ivar on Instagram: “Well we did it finally! It was an amazing day despite the miserable British weather. Fabulous service conducted by Trish Harrogate, chief Registrar for Devon, who set the perfect but lighthearted tone for what is a serious occasion. The accompanying gospel choir were amazing. Thank you so much to Bristol’s Teachers Rock Choir for your superb singing. Most importantly a massive thanks to my 3 gorgeous girls for being so understanding and supportive, without their support this could never have happened! And finally the biggest thank you to James for being just perfect……#wedidit #wonderfulday#despitetherain”
