As one-year anniversary nears, Pulse owner announces plans for a memorial

Almost a year after the 12 June Pulse nightclub massacre, club owner Barbara Poma believes it’s time to memorialize the tragedy that took so many lives.

‘Pulse has always been a part of me, but after this tragedy which took 49 lives, it became a part of this community and the world,’ Poma stated in a news release.

‘It’s important that we as a community be mindful and take great care to preserve, honor and help heal.’

A gunman entered the gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killed 49 people, and injured 53 more.

The shooting was the deadliest hate crime against LGBTI people in American history and the deadliest terrorist attack since 9/11.

Poma originally considered selling the building to the city of Orlando after the attack but has since changed her mind and instead decided to launch her own foundation, onePULSE.

The foundation plans to raise money to build and maintain the memorial, as well as provide grants to help survivors and families of the Pulse victims.
