Trans community to get government housing in India

Government housing will soon be built for the trans community in Kerala.

The government of the south-eastern Indian state has already lead the country in trans initiatives. In May the Kochi Metro Rail provided jobs to 23 trans people and Kerala hosted the country’s first trans athletics competition.

The housing project will begin with night shelters for trans people with independent housing planned for the future.

Kerala’s government Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment (LIFE project) will construct the housing. LIFE is a program to support disadvantaged people in Kerala.

LIFE will provided housing to pre-determined groups which include; trans people, differently abled people, single mothers, people living with HIV and those with mental health issues.

‘Social security schemes will be initiated in the housing complexes, as well as skill training for adults among the beneficiaries,’ a statement on LIFE reads on Kerala Chief Minister’s website.
