History may about to be made with Oscar’s first trans actress nominee

Chilean actress Daniela Vega could be about to be the first trans women to win an Oscar.

The 28-year old made waves staring as the lead character in Chilean film A Fantastic Woman.

The movie follows Vega’s character, Marina, as she deals with the death of her partner.

Much like Vega herself, Marina is trans.

Her partner’s family are extremely transphobic towards her, all the while Marina is figuring out life without her loved one.

Variety magazine labeled Vega’s performance ‘a multi-layered, emotionally polymorphous feat of acting.’

‘Art saved my life’

Vega explained in an interview she relates to situations Marina faces throughout the movie.

She said: ‘In the past, when I was in school, I experienced violence.

‘And also as an adult, after transitioning and while looking for work, I have also experienced violence. Art saved my life.’

Chile has put A Fantastic Woman forward as its Oscars submission.
