Adam Rippon missed second Olympic medal but won the hearts of the world

Adam Rippon didn’t land a podium finish in his final event at The Winter Olympics – but he’s won the hearts and minds of the world.

The US figure skater has become a hero for his open attitude towards many subjects, such as sexuality, health and of course US Vice President Mike Pence.

The 28-year-old made history as the first openly gay man to compete for America in the winter edition of the games.

‘Adam Rippon will not medal, but he’s the winner’

Competing in the men’s figure skating on Friday (16 February), he walked away without a second medal  – but it’s the respect and love he’s earned from fans across the globe that makes him the true star of this year’s games.

Beforehand, Rippon won hearts when he came came in seventh place during the competition on Thursday (15 February).

Here’s his short program, when he performed it at Nationals right before the Olympics.

Rippon ‘can”t explain witchcraft’

He finished with 87.95 points, the highest spot for a US skater after Nathan Chen’s disappointing performance.

Following the short program, an interviewer spoke to Rippon. NBC’s Andrea Joyce asked him: ‘You’re 28 years old, skating the best you ever have in your life. How do you explain that to people?’

His reply instantly become iconic: ‘I can’t explain witchcraft.’
