‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett finally speaks out about his homophobic, racist assault

Last night, Empire actor Jussie Smollett spoke about the homophobic racist attack he endured earlier this week, helping dispel myths that have surrounded his assault.

During his singing performance at Los Angeles’s Troubadour club, Smollett said:

I have so many words on my heart. The most important thing that I can say is thank you so much and that I’m okay. I’m not fully healed yet, but I’m going to. And I’m gonna stand strong with y’all. I had to be here tonight. I couldn’t let those m*th*rf*ck*rs win. l will always stand for love. I will never stand for anything other than that. Regardless of what anyone else says, I will only stand for love. And I hope that you all will stand with me. So thank you….

He continued:

There has been a lot of stuff said about me that’s absolutely not true… There are just a couple of points I wanted to make pretty quick…. four points … I was bruised but my ribs were not cracked; they were not broken. I went to the doctor immediately. I was not hospitalized. Both my doctors in L.A. and Chicago cleared me to perform, but said to take care, obviously. And above all: I fought the f*ck back.

Early in the morning last Tuesday, Smollett was beaten by two white men while in Chicago to working on the black musical drama series Empire.  Smollett said his attackers used the n-word and “f*gg*t,” placed a noose around his neck, and poured bleach on him.

When police arrived, Smollett had cuts and wounds and still had the noose around his neck. He went to the hospital after talking with police.

The attackers were wearing ski masks and have not yet been identified. Chicago Police have released video images of two people of interest.

In addition to being an openly gay actor, Smollett is also an accomplished singer. His singing has been released on several Empire soundtracks, and this last March he released his debut album, Sum of My Music — it contained d a Trump diss-track.
