Seth Owen first attracted national media attention last year when his parents kicked him out of the house and denied him his college fund for being gay. Now, he just landed an internship on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Stephanie Murphy‘s (D-FL) selected 18-year-old Owen to join her staff from January through the end of the semester, working closely with the rest of the congressional staff.

Murphy herself lavished praise on her new intern.

“I am proud that Seth chose to be a part of our team,” she said in a statement. “He will always be welcomed here, and I’m am happy to see him thrive. Our entire office is rooting for his continued success.”

Owen has also used his recent fame as a means to help others. Using a $25,000 donation from talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, he began his own scholarship fund designed to help students from marginalized communities attend secondary education.

Though his parents expelled him from the house for being gay, Owen still managed to graduate as Valedictorian from First Coast High in Jacksonville, FL. He received a full-ride scholarship to Georgetown University shortly thereafter.
