Outraged over HB-2, North Carolina lawmaker announces he’s bisexual

Listening to people’s ‘ignorant opinions’ about LGBTI people just got to be too much for North Carolina State Representative Cecil Brockman.

So now he’s decided to come out publicly as a bisexual so people will have to say those things to his face.

‘I’ve heard what people say about LGBT people when they think they’re talking to a room full of straight people,’ Brockman tells the Greensboro News & Record.

‘It was incredibly frustrating to hear people who have very ignorant opinions because very few of those people know a member of the LGBT community.’

It became increasingly difficult for Brockman to avoid the topic since his state passed House Bill 2 (HB-2) earlier this year which targets transgender people.

The hugely controversial law has led to immense backlash against the state with numerous sporting events and concerts scheduled there canceled.

Brockman believe it’s important to tell his fellow lawmakers that they are serving with members of the LGBTI community.

‘I hope it opens people’s eyes to realize that the work we do affects real people’s lives.’

Now that he is out, Brockman wants to be even more of an advocate for LGBTI equality. The Democrat was first elected to the House in 2014 and is up for re-election this week.
